Tony Munoz and I met in Germany, in the Air Force. I was looking for some
outlet for my musical urges, and walked down to the Catholic service at the
base chapel. Tony was doing music there, and when I met him, I did not continue
to play in church. I played with Tony.
While stationed at Shaikh Isa Airbase in Bahrain, I met Jim Fugate. Jim
had a killer voice, like Brad Delp of Boston. Jim and Tony and I recorded
just a few songs before splitting for our post-military lives. Tony stayed in;
I went to college. Jim shot himself dead on December 12, 1994. We will never
know why. Since Jim was the keeper of the addresses, Tony and I lost each
other for twenty years. Facebook brought us back together.
Tony preserved the tapes we'd made back when; here're the tracks.
Several of these are demo tapes, with a drum machine or a single person on
all of the instruments. Lyrics were in flux -- I have different arrangements
of a couple. It's a snapshot of a half-started project.
Flesh Colored Crayon was:
Tony Munoz, bass and vocals
Jim Fugate, vocals
Steve Sparks, lead and rhythm guitar
Robert Munoz, drums
Keith Fields, rhythm guitar on "Why"
Why -- This song is a live track; we played it at some sort of talent show. We always figured this song for the first single. The guitar sounds surprisingly good; I was playing through a little practice amp that was miked and sent through the PA.
Till The End -- This song I have remembered as "It Won't Be Long", and I have a different set of lyrics for the second verse.
I Needed A Change -- This is probably the finest example of Jim's voice. One of the very last songs we did, I felt like we were digging into some new territory with our key choices, and I was pretty excited about the direction this song signaled.
I'm Missing You
Au Revoir
To Hear Her Voice
Setbacks --
I loved this song, and did a couple versions:
Setbacks-1993 After I got to college, I scripted it in my very first computer music program, Scream Tracker.
setbacks-1999
And when I later got better equipment, I did this instrumental.
But the lyrics I remember and have written down are not the ones on this demo. They're much more cutting, about a guy who is rejected by a girl who is after a specific look.
B-15
Mt Baby Cry
Press Your Lips
Amy Don't Go
Homewood Thing
I barely remember doing these things, but they're pretty great.
